Záznam DSpace 7 Benefits : Is It Worth Upgrading?(Information Technology and Libraries, 2024-09-18) Formanek, MatúšThis study discusses the importance of the DSpace open-source software that supports numerous digital libraries and repositories around the world. With the release of DSpace version 7, a natural question that arises is whether the new version offers enough new functionalities to motivate system administrators to upgrade. This paper briefly describes the most important changes, including new features and bug fixes, included in DSpace 7.4 and prior minor versions. The next parts of this paper explore our estimate that there are several thousand DSpace-based systems globally that will likely have to be upgraded in the near future. The main reason for this need is that older versions of DSpace (including 5.x) have reached the end of their developer support period or are reaching it in mid-2023. Based on our own upgrade experience, we propose suggestions and recommendations on migrating from the previous DSpace 6.3-based environment to the new one in a case study that concludes this article.Záznam Solving SEO Issues in DSpace-based Digital Repositories(Information Technology and Libraries, 2021-03-19) Formanek, MatúšThis paper discusses the importance of search engine optimization (SEO) for digital repositories. We first describe the importance of SEO in the academic environment. Online systems, such as institutional digital repositories, are established and used to disseminate scientific information. Next, we present a case study of our own institution’s DSpace repository, performing several SEO tests and identifying the potential SEO issues through a group of three independent audit tools. In this case study, we attempt to resolve most of the SEO problems that appeared within our research and propose solutions to them. After making the necessary adjustments, we were able to improve the quality of SEO variables by more than 59% compared to the non-optimized state (a fresh installation of DSpace). Finally, we apply the same software audit tools to a sample of global institutional repositories also based on DSpace. In the discussion, we compare the SEO sample results with the average score of the semi-optimized DSpace repository (from the case study) and make conclusions.Záznam Virtualizovaná databáza vedeckej korešpondencie v rokoch 1500-1800 s využitím softvéru DSpace(Ikaros, 2019-10-03) Formanek, MatúšVirtualizácia je dnes už bežnou technológiou, ktorá sa čoraz častejšie využíva i mimo podnikového segmentu, napríklad vo vzdelávacích, výskumných, či pamäťových inštitúciách. Vďaka viacerým voľne dostupným open source riešeniam sa stáva táto technológia dostupnou i pre organizácie, pre ktoré sú nízke, resp. žiadne licenčné poplatky za softvér častokrát rozhodujúcim faktorom. V článku ďalej popisujeme situáciu, v ktorej virtualizovaný systém s DSpace s úspechom využívame iným, alternatívnym spôsobom - k prehľadnému ukladaniu a sprístupňovaniu metadátových záznamov o najrôznejších entitách. Teoretické i praktické jadro problematickej témy sme spracovali formou prípadovej štúdie, v ktorej sme vzniknutý problém analyzovali, pričom sme sa pokúsili i načrtnúť možné riešenie. Podstata štúdie spočíva primárne v návrhu efektívneho riešenia migrácie systému digitálneho repozitára ako celku. Predmetný digitálny repozitár sme plánovali z viacerých bezpečnostných dôvodov aktualizovať, čo vyústilo napokon do nutnosti migrácie jednotlivých jeho súčastí do úplne nového, modernejšieho prostredia. My sa pokúsime o abstraktnejší teoretický náčrt riešenia, v ktorom budeme repozitár vnímať ako jeden, no o to komplexnejší objekt s odpovedajúcimi vlastnosťami. Je všeobecne známe, že digitálny objekt môžeme, v prípade potreby, premiestniť z jedného elektronického priestoru do druhého. Pri dodržaní istých pravidiel a postupov nehrozí strata integrity samotného objektu ani jeho metadát. Praktická realizácia postupov však už nemusí byť triviálna záležitosť.Záznam Digitálny repozitár ako terč kybernetického útoku(Ikaros, 2017) Formanek, Matúš; Zaborsky, MartinThis paper points out selected general security issues of digital repositories and some known means of cyber attacks initiated against them within the global network. In the theoretical introduction, the authors rely on expert studies and articles drawn to the established topic. By means of the case study method in particular academic environment and their own experience gained in dealing with security incident in the digital library environment running the Invenio system, authors describe the important aspects of a critical migration of the system from one server to another. In this process, it is necessary to ensure the transfer of digital library objects and metadata related to them. At the end, the paper provides professional public incentives and motives for creating disaster recovery plan, in case their digital library does not have any yet.Záznam Konkrétne prínosy inštitucionálneho repozitára vo vysokoškolskom akademickom prostredí(Ikaros, 2016) Formanek, MatúšIn this paper we summarize the results of the qualitative analysis carried out in 2015 in collaboration with twelve researchers from the University of Zilina, Slovakia. The primary part of the discussed research was focused on acquiring of the opinions about the specific usecases of the upcoming digital library, respectively institutional repository by the method of semistructured interviews with these participants. The results of this qualitative exploring show that there is a wide range of valuable electronic materials in this environment. Next, we point out the fact that the digital repository can be used in improving of mutual information exchange process and the processes of communication between scientists. Other advantages are: creating and sharing explicit knowledge base, the searching of heterogeneous information e-resources as well as providing efficient access to them. These and other mentioned examples can produce significant enhancement of the work of scientists, as well as ongoing educational processes. Although the research paper draws insights only from a particular university environment, it can suggest a picture of the current situation in the wider academic sphere.Záznam The progress of web security level related to European open access LIS repositories between 2016 and 2018(Italian Journal of Library, Archives, and Information Science (JLIS.it), 2019-05-15) Formanek, Matúš; Sustekova, Erika; Filip, VladimirThis article focuses on the development of European institutional repositories web security in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). Since the first analysis in June 2016, we have been still using the same three independent online tools to measure the web security score of these repositories. In case of data transfer, the qualitative aspects of the secured HTTPS protocol are as important as implementing the protocol itself. Our analysis is directly related to the previously published article where we examined the selected group of LIS repositories. Now, we are focusing on the summarization of improvements made between 2016-2018. These are based on periodical annual measurements. These may contribute to increasing the security level of repositories not only in Europe, but also with respect to the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) regulation which came into force a few months ago. It is significant because the GDPR focuses, inter alia, on the ways of sensitive data transfer over the internet networksZáznam Web Interface Security Vulnerabilities of European Academic Repositories(LIBER Quarterly, 2017-02-24) Formanek, Matúš; Zaborsky, MartinThe given analysis summarizes the status quo of the level of security of web interfaces of selected European academic repositories in the field of library and information science. It focuses on the presence and qualities of the secure HTTPS protocol via SSL/TLS protocols. The security of the transmitted data is particularly important in the network environment of the Internet, especially if log-in user data is transmitted. Disclosure may have a direct impact on saved digital objects and their metadata which together represent the most valuable parts of systems of digital libraries and repositories. Furthermore, the paper points to the most noticeable vulnerabilities of protocols of web interfaces and presents practical recommendations for the expert public. These may contribute to the increase of the level of security of the discussed systems. The authors base their proposals on the currently available scientific publications and scientific articles about the given topic.
